Carolyn Scott Kortge is an author, a former newspaper journalist, public speaker, and past competitive racewalker who has transitioned from walking for speed and fitness to walking for wholeness and well-being. The Spirited Walker: Fitness Walking for Clarity, Balance, and Spiritual Connection (HarperCollins) chronicles her mid-life journey from klutz to athlete, and introduces mindfulness tools shared by athletes and meditators. Healing Walks for Hard Times: An 8-Week Program (Shambhala) chronicles a different journey, sharing healing steps that carried her through cancer a few years later. It offers a guided walking program to get your feet back on the ground when life bowls you over. In 2014, she and her husband walked 273 miles on the legendary Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage trail in northern Spain. A resident of Eugene, OR, she writes a monthly column called “Not the Retiring Type” for The Register-Guard newspaper and posts occasional blog entries on her website: The Spirited Walker.
